Neat animation that might have several possible uses outside the proposed. Be kind of cool for a 3D Tron Lightcycle type of game or environment. 2D sphere surface (or cube) doesn't have quite the strict 2D square issues of the traditional Tron Lightcycle.
Was also looking at Marine Microrganisms [1] because of the Ars link earlier about the plethora of organisms away from the Earth's surface, and the general idea of the tubules on a surface has quite a bit of similarity to collections like Pelagibacter ubique [2]
Might also be interesting as an alternative on the game of life types of ideas, with rulesets about how the tubules are motivated to move relative to each other, rather than a priori specified movement paths.
As the developer of this animation and a game developer by day (and night) I had considered the light cycle game. Many great sessions on Armagetron back in the day. Very tricky on a cube to keep multiple players visible at once and also to have controls and direction be consistent.
Was actually thinking something that would be multi-player from each player's perspective. Perhaps not a cube also, although a cube would work and be an interesting terrain variation. Sphere though would be a more obvious implementation choice.
I had done something similar once on an 8x8x8 LED cube. I implemented a 3d, 2-player lightcycle game with two snakes. You could move around the cube's surface, or you could press a button to cut through the cube to the opposite side. Catch was that you could not change directions while going through the cube, only when on the surface, so you had to be careful the other player didn't have the chance to cut you off before you made it to the other side.
That’s a fun coincidence. I was at a museum recently that featured work of Sema Bekirovic. One of her works was that of 3 snails crawling over a grid cube so from then on they were the artists.

If appeasement politics don’t work and you have a (bit of a cruel IMO) dislike for slugs you can use salt cubes
