I was in this space (out of work now) for 20 years and at the end things just got bonkers. The best companies I have worked for don’t even have a hands on coding project. At worst they have a SIMPLE take home project to test critical thinking skills. The worst jobs are the ones requiring hours of interviews and tech conversations.
Note that I am out of work due to declining health. I’ve seen some improvement, and have been thinking about going back if things continue to trend upward, but the current state of dev and onboarding has me sick to my stomach.
This does indeed sound Kafkaesque. I haven't had to go through an interview process in many years now, and I'm not looking forward to it if I have to in the future. It does seem like the entire tech space has been invaded by MBAs who need to justify their positions by setting up these - often unnecessary - multi-tiered interviews. If it takes more than 3 interviews to hire someone, I think you're doing it wrong.
Haven't experienced it myself as I haven't been looking to move jobs, but anecdotally from others I know who have, finding any software dev job in 2025 (and a large part of 2024) has been rather bleak for most and the job market has been effectively "frozen" (not shedding a lot of jobs -- yet -- but also not really looking to hire).
