So is the new part that it's apes instead of monkeys, or that they're sharing and being picky about that? Because I know monkeys have been known to get drunk since quite a while ago.
FWIW there was an entire book on the subject of animal intoxication published some years ago, its name escapes me ATM.
Even birds can deliberately make themselves intoxicated:
