I would love to see an experiment where you take 500 randomly selected performant stocks and compare them with the performance of the S&P 500. I have this feeling that it as a list isn't necessarily that special.

Not orthogonal to your point, but a distinctive feature of market-cap-weighted portfolios is that they are inherently self-rebalancing.
