the problem is he's made the military complicit already. they're already doing Duterte-esque extrajudicial killings of random Venezuelan people in the Caribbean. It is not that conservative voters dont know where this goes, it is that they like where it goes and want to get there. You and I perceive the regime you allude to as bad, they dont, wink wink, actually.
All military personnel take the oath to protect the USA, abide by the constitution. At all levels they are to resist illegal orders.
At the top levels, many are salivating at the prospect of generously paid roles in service of the military-industry complex. Standing by sworn principles is a career limiting move.
