This is unfortunate but not surprising. Google acquired Tenor in 2018 and has been slowly integrating it into their ecosystem.
For anyone looking for alternatives:
- Giphy API (still free tier available )
- GIFDB (smaller but decent library)
- Self-host with your own GIF collection
The real pain is migrating existing integrations. Anyone know if Google is offering a migration path or just killing it outright?
You can migrate to klipy in 10 mins https://klipy.com/migrate , we can even help you migrate your tenor acc. KLIPY is led by all ex-tenor founders/leadership, you can check our linkedin
Google killing APIs has become so predictable there's literally a website tracking it (killedbygoogle.com).
What's wild is they give you 3 months to rip out and replace something that might be a core feature. That's not a migration timeline, that's an emergency.
This is why vendor lock-in concerns aren't just paranoia anymore.
